chairGORDON MONK has been hand-making greenwood chairs and benches for about 10 years. He enjoys selecting each branch and log of sustainable British wood and letting them suggest the shape that the furniture will take. Greenwood making can be a slow process as each element has to be shaped or turned individually. The black finish is achieved by treating the surface with vinegar and wire wool which reacts with the tannins in the wood and turns it black. Recently Gordon has been experimenting with high-backed and diagonal leg shapes that nevertheless have their origins in the simple making methods of rustic furniture. He works to commission and has recently completed a set of dining room chairs and an extra-large Story Teller chair.
